I recently had the pleasure of working with the founder of the gorgeous homewares brand Scented Purpose, to develop some branding elements that tied in with their signature logo, and told the story of their brand. I sat down with the founder Amanda Park, and asked her exactly what it’s like to run a heart centred business with a huge focus on kindness.
Hi Amanda! Could you tell me a bit about why you started your business and what the initial vision was?
I purely started our business with a view to get our creative back on – my daughter & I that is. I have always had a ‘hobby’ or business apart from my day job. But I have always let life get in the way and I missed the joy of creating and following what lights me up. My daughter’s big kind heart was what inspired me. Let’s create a business together while showing people the power of kindness and in turn showing my daughter the power of keeping her big heart open and following her joy, was what I thought.
Have you faced any challenges along the way? What was this like for you?
Quite possibly like most my biggest challenge is that of time – or feeling like I am always running against it. I work 3-4 days per week so Scented Purpose has to currently fit around that along with raising a family and a husband that is most often away due to his work commitments. But due to the passionate nature of doing what lights you up it consumes my thinking constantly and I very often find myself with the feeling of ‘I know where I would rather be’ So mindset has been a big thing I have been working on.
How did you overcome these challenges?
I found I was becoming over anxious about the growing to do list so I have worked very hard on being kind to myself, taking care of my well-being and working on my mindset. I listen to podcasts on my long commute to work and use this as my thinking time just to try to alleviate my overthinking nature. It is definitely a work in progress but I like to think because I am aware of it that is a step in the right direction. I have also found putting less pressure on myself to be all things has helped in a massive way.
What is it that you enjoy the most about what you do?
Definitely no. 1 is working with my daughter. She often says ‘mummy we are really doing so well – look how far we have come’ She is proud of everything we put out there even if I have niggling doubts sometimes. I also love the feedback … hearing that we have made someone feel special means so much. We have always wanted our business to be way more about the purpose than the profit and I truly believe when a business comes from a heartfelt place it will always shine. Then there’s the connections – such incredible connections made with other business owners and getting to follow their journey and successes definitely lights us up.
Often, embarking on a branding journey marks the new chapter in the life of a business, or the new beginning of a business. I’d love to know what’s happening for you right now in your journey, and why you decided to embrace this new season of business!
We were very lucky to meet an amazing woman who designed our logo and also went on to design some instagram posts for us. Unfortunately this year she made the decision to take her business in a different direction. It really turned out to be perfect timing and gave me the push to embrace new design elements and allow our business to move towards a bit more of an organic feel. I definitely believe things happen for a reason and even though I knew I needed to invest in some extra branding I was holding off for a ‘right time’ & thinking I should remain loyal to the person I started working with.
If you could give women in business one piece of advice, what would that be?
Don’t wait … there will never be a perfect time. The time is definitely now. So often other women say to me ‘I wish I could do something like that’ or ‘There really isn’t enough time for me to explore what I love’. I want to shout it out ‘everyone can follow there joy’ whether you start out as a hobby or start a course or simply take extra care of yourself. It all adds up and leads you to that place of happy! I have also found by allowing Scented Purpose to flow naturally and not trying to push for some preconceived idea, it takes us in directions we couldn’t have first envisaged. Having always had a small business while working a day job & once upon a time being a single mother I am here to tell everyone it can be done. When you love something you will find a way.
I‘d also love to know if there is anything exciting coming up for you, or any products/services that are new and exciting!
There are quite a few exciting things coming up for Scented Purpose. Both Emerson and I are thrilled about our new Spring range. We have recently launched our latest scented beauty entitled Bloom. Our hope is that it serves as an indulgent reminder of simple joys, natural beauty and allowing your own unique light to shine through. We also have a new photo shoot coming up in the next few weeks to show off a new product we have been working on, along with having the opportunity to come together and create for some amazing women in business. Very exciting times ahead & we look forward to what come next!
